Moog-Animatics Digital Servo Drive

Responding to the continuing market trends toward greater efficiency and speed, Moog Animatics recently released the DS2020 digital servo drive with Combitronic™ capability. Their DS2020 is a single-axis drive operating a Moog CD series motor delivering high torque capabilities for demanding applications, such as large axes of motion. In 2021, the DS2020 was nominated for the Idea! Awards in the Motors and Drives category.

According to Moog Animatics, the DS2020 drive with Combitronic expands the standard drive’s capabilities and allows it to act as a follower device on the Combitronic network. This expanded capability means any SmartMotor™ can easily control the drive on that network, letting the DS2020 Combitronic drive fit and work seamlessly in SmartMotor-based machines and applications while supporting the familiar SMI™ software and AniBasic programming language for configuring and programming the entire system.

The Value of Combitronic Technology

Standard on the DS2020 drive is Moog Animatics’ proprietary Combitronic technology. Many customers are looking for a more streamlined and compact machine, and the DS2020 fits the bill. Using Combitronic, integrated servos can tag a local variable or command to interact with other Combitronic systems or SmartMotors over a controller area network (CAN). Operators do not have to have an in-depth understanding of the CAN protocol.

SmartMotors for Power and Precision

Moog’s SmartMotor servos are fully-integrated and can control error checking, data collection, and motion even with just a single SmartMotor. Connecting multiple drives and motors unburdens the centralized control from localized tasks. While SmartMotors have hundreds of practical uses, they are well-suited to precision positioning in situations like packaging, antenna and radar tracking, and take-up winding applications.

Efficiency in Function and Design

In addition to the functional efficiency of communicating with other SmartMotor or DS2020 Combitronic systems without the need for a single line of communications code, Moog has delivered a more compact design. The DS2020 takes up significantly less space during installation. Moog has compressed the controls into the motors and created a drive that offers a lot of value in a smaller yet smarter package. And despite the more compact design, the DS2020 provides a power output range similar to other large servo standard digital drives.

Since 1987, Moog Animatics has become a leader in the development of brushless servo motors and drives. The DS2020 offers several innovative features and illustrates Moog’s ongoing commitment to intelligent, precision design.
